Florida Poker Phenom, Vanessa Rousso, Comes Home for Several Appearances

March 17th, 2009 by Robert Weston
Respond

Mar 17, 2009 – Gorgeous, brilliant, and amazingly talented Team PokerStars Pro, Vanessa Rousso, is on a roll so far in 2009—and she’s coming home (to Florida) to celebrate.  In February, Rousso was featured in a two-page spread in the highly anticipated Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition.  On March 6th, Rousso joined female racecar icon, Danica Patrick, as the newest spokeswoman for the domain registrar/web hosting giant, GoDaddy.com. Just three days after becoming the latest ‘GoDaddy Girl,’ Rousso became the first female to make the finals of the prestigious NBC National Heads Up Poker Championship.  Rousso overcame one of the most difficult brackets in the tournament’s history to finish in second place, raking in $250,000.  Now, Rousso is coming home to celebrate—taking a well-deserved break from the pro poker tournament circuit, and turning her attention to several appearances around her home state.  Her tour of the Sunshine State includes the following:

•   Rousso kicks off her Florida tour on Friday, March 20th at the Jacksonville Orange Park Kennel Club, where she will play in a charity tournament for her newly launched anti-poverty foundation, The No Limit, No Profit Initiative (http://www.nolimitnoprofit.org), as well as several other charities.
•   Saturday, March 21st at the Jacksonville Orange Park Kennel Club, Rousso returns for a short lecture on  Game Theory and Poker tournament techniques.  She will also play in an invitation-only tournament.
•   Monday, March 23rd, Rousso will participate in the Pompano Beach’s Isle Casino ‘Battle at the Beach’ $300K guaranteed tournament.  She will be available to sign autographs and take photographs during the tournament’s scheduled breaks.
•   Saturday, March 28th at the Palm Beach Kennel Club, Rousso will give a short lecture on Game Theory and Poker and play in an invitation-only tournament.
•   Sunday, April 5th at the Isle Casino in Pompano Beach, Rousso will launch her innovative poker instructional camp: ‘The Art of Poker—An Intro to Game Theory and Poker.’  For details, or to register, visit the Big Slick Boot Camp website at http://www.BigSlickBootCamp.com.
•   Saturday, April 11th at the Jacksonville Orange Park Kennel Club, Vanessa will teach another session of ‘The Art of Poker—An Intro to Game Theory and Poker.’
•   Sunday, April 26th at the Palm Beach Kennel Club, Rousso will close out her Florida tour with one final opportunity for Florida poker players to attend her out-of-the-box boot camp, ‘The Art of Poker—An Intro to Game Theory and Poker.’

Rousso’s road to poker stardom began shortly after she graduated from Wellington High School as valedictorian of her class in 2001. Receiving a full scholarship to Duke University, she graduated with a four-year degree in just 2 1/2 years.  While at Duke, she vigorously pursued the study of ‘strategic decision-making’—taking every available course on Game Theory.  Eventually, this led to Vanessa’s curiosity about the game of poker and she began to analyze the strategic elements of the game.  While studying at the University of Miami School of Law (on another full scholarship) her amateur poker ranking soon accelerated to that of world class professional when she placed seventh (for over $260,000) in the World Poker Tour World Championships at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. The blonde poker whiz from Florida caught the attention of online poker site, PokerStars, with whom she landed a lucrative sponsorship deal in 2006.

Since then, Vanessa’s success as a renowned international poker player has sky rocketed—she now has over $2M in tournament winnings.  In keeping with her academic roots, when she isn’t playing poker, Rousso says that her passion is teaching poker strategy.  Rousso recently teamed up with Big Slick Boot Camp LLC, to present a series of instructional workshops grounded in ‘Game Theory’ and Sun Tzu’s teachings about The Art of War (see schedule of events above or at www.bigslickbootcamp.com). This 26 year-old poker phenomenon from Hobe Sound, Florida has a unique combination of talent, beauty and brains—Vanessa Rousso is the ‘total package’ and now she is coming to a poker room near you.

Win a National Heads-Up Poker Championship Seat

January 2nd, 2009 by Robert Weston
Respond

Now in its fourth year the National Heads-Up Poker Championship provides players with a unique challenge – playing on-on-one against the best in the world until the last player is left standing. This is an invite only, 64-player tournament held in Las Vegas, and Pokerstars US players can join poker’s elite by qualifying online with PokerStars.

To win your seat at this exclusive event, simply enter the Pokerstars Round 1 freerolls. Get through those and the next stage is Round 2 - finish in the top 56 there and you will qualify for the Grand Final where there are two prize packages worth over $21,000 each ($20,000 tournament entry, four nights accommodation, and $1,000 for travel) up for grabs.

Last year, Alisha Kunze from Indiana qualified for free with PokerStars. She took her place at the Championship, and sat down to the one of the toughest tests in poker. Despite playing against some of the best players in the world, Alisha fought hard, but eventually perished when her Kings met Aces.

You could be sitting down for your first round match with a member of Team PokerStars Pros staring back at you across the felt. Daniel Negreanu, Barry Greenstein, Joe Hachem, Vanessa Rousso and Greg Raymer are all regulars at the Championship, which is always highly competitive. The event will be staged at Caesar’s Palace, the venue for many historic sporting events, and the National Heads-Up Poker Championship lives up to that reputation.
How to qualify for the freerolls

PokerStars.com is running daily freeroll qualifier tournaments to win two National Heads-Up Poker Championship prize packages.
Round 1

Round 1 tournaments run every day from December 20 2008 - February 20 2009, at 19:00 and 22:00 ET. Finish in the top 200 places and you will move on to Round 2.

To find the tournament and register to play, open the PokerStars lobby, click ‘Tourney’ & ‘Regional’. The tournaments will be listed as ‘Heads-Up Qualifying – Round 1 (U.S. players)’.
Round 2

Round 2 tournaments will take place December 27, January 3, January 10, January 17, January 24, January 31, February 7, February 14 and February 21 at 16:00 ET. Players that finish in the top 56 positions will get to play in the Grand Final!

Last Chance: There will also be a bonus tournament providing a last chance to make it to the Grand Final. This one-off tourney will take place February 21 at 19:00 ET. Players finishing in spots 1-8 in this tournament will win seats to the Grand Final.
Grand Final

The Grand Final will take place on February 22, 2009 at 15:00 ET - with two National Heads-Up Championship prize packages awarded to the players finishing in first and second positions. The National Heads-Up Championship itself will take place March 5-8 2009.
Please Note:

Visit Pokestars

* This promotion is only open to players from the U.S. Players may play in as many Round 1 tournaments as they wish, and as many Round 2 tournaments as they qualify for. Unused Round 2 tickets cannot be transferred, and they carry no value follow the end of the promotion. Players may only qualify for the Grand Final once. Extra seats won will be forfeited and awarded to the next eligible qualifier from the relevant Round 2 tournament. If you have already won a seat to the Grand Final, please do not continue playing, as additional seats have no value.
* Prize package winners must be able to travel between March 5-8 2009. Winners are responsible for booking their own travel arrangements to Las Vegas. If a winner is unable to attend the event their prize package will be forfeited with no consideration and awarded to the next eligible player.

Respond

On November 22nd at 2:05pm ET, Full Tilt Poker along with HoldemPokerChat.com will be running a charity tournament for Bad Beat on Cancer and the Prevent Cancer Foundation as part of our 24 hour poker marathon.

Cost for the tournament is $5 for the prize pool, plus an additional $5 for the charity. We have also added $150 to the prizepool. Full TIlt Poker pro Rafe Furst will be playing the tournament, and we hope many more of the Full Tilt pros will also be in attendance.

Details for the tournament are as follows:

November 22nd, 2:01pm ET
Full Tilt Poker
Private tournament tab: Bad Beat on Cancer
Password: charity
$5 plus $5 with $250 added to the prizepool*
Tournament #64689765
(Under the Private Tournaments tab)

* $250 has been added to this prizepool, $150 from Holdem Poker Chat and $100 from the kind people at Cardrunners.com. Remember you can trade in Full Tilt Poker points for free poker training from Cardrunners.com

Even if you can’t make it, please consider registering anyway since all proceeds will go to the Prevent Cancer Foundation. I hope to see you all there.

About the Prevent Cancer Foundation:

The Prevent Cancer Foundation was started in 1985 when Founder and President Carolyn Aldige first understood the power of prevention to defeat cancer — and recognized that too few of the country’s resources were used to promote cancer prevention research or education. Today, it is one of the nation’s leading health organizations and has catapulted cancer prevention to prominence. Since its inception the Foundation has provided more than $74 million in support of cancer prevention and early detection research and education programs. CRPF peer-reviewed grants have been awarded to more than 250 scientists from more than 150 of the leading academic medical centers nationwide. This research has been pivotal in developing a body of knowledge that is the basis for important cancer prevention and early detection strategies.

About Bad Beat on Cancer:

Bad Beat on Cancer was started a few years ago by Rafe Furst and Phil Gordon to help fund cancer research and prevention – by playing poker. They ask professionals and amateurs alike to donate 1% of whatever they win at the WSOP. They’ve been extraordinarily successful over the last few years, raising over $1 million for a very worthy cause. It’s a very fiscally responsible organization, nearly 86 cents from every dollar goes to the cancer research programs that they’re funding. It’s a great organization and they have most of the world’s greatest players signed up.
